    2. Initial Diagnosis and Classification of Epilepsy
    3. Medication Changes
    4. Pre-Surgical Epilepsy Evaluation

Are there risks associated with an EEG?

There are no risks associated with an EEG. The test is painless and safe. If an EEG doesn’t produce abnormalities, then stimuli such as strobe lights and rapid breathing (also known as hyperventilation) may be added to help induce abnormalities. However, our technicians are trained to safely manage any situation that may occur so you have nothing to worry about.

Why is an EEG performed?

EEGs are performed to confirm or rule out various conditions. These include the following:

  • Seizure Disorders
  • Epilepsy
  • Encephalitis (Inflammation of the Brain)
  • Brain Tumors
  • Headache/Migraines
  • Encephalopathy (A Disease That Causes Brain Dysfunction)
  • Memory Problems
  • Sleep Disorders
  • Strokes
  • Heart Attacks
  • Dementia

Additionally, if someone is in a coma, an EEG may be performed to determine the patient’s level of brain activity. The test can also be used to monitor activity during brain surgery.
